Chapter 16: India

Functions of the State & Governmental Structure:
  • Social classes were based on the caste system
  • The government consisted of those belonging to one of the highest castes (after priests)
  • The arrival of Islam deeply impacted the governmnent.
  • During the twelfth century, India establishd an Islamic state known as the Sultanate of Dehli.
  • The Sultanate of Dehli was one of the most powerful Islamic states for about 300 years. (1206-1526)
  • The northern part of India was politically divided due to war and invasions.
  • The Chola Kingdom (850 - 1267) expanded over southern India.
  • The other state that dominated much of southern India was Vijayanagar, who did not follow the newfound religion of Islam, but kept their traditional Hindu values.
  • ^^ was ruled by two brothers: Harihara and Bukka
  • India was not politically successful because of its lack of power to keep a strong, centralized government, but they did influence many other south-east Asian countries.
  • Angkor and Srivijaya were two of the south-east Asian states that was deeply influenced by India
  • The capital of Angkor, Angkor Thom, was built with aids of Indian priests, and was based on India's political structure.
  • Overall, politically and culturally, India helped link south-east Asia to the rest of the world.
